Kay de Wolf and Lucas Coenen about their race in Spain
Kay de Wolf not only achieved a convincing victory during qualifying on Saturday, but he also set a textbook example by winning the opening round on the intu Xanadú-Arroyomolinos circuit on Sunday.
In the second moto, Wolf jumped from fourth on the opening lap to the lead on the fourth lap with a series of incredible overtakes. It was only halfway through the race that #74 dropped to second place, while briefly in the wheels of Andrea Adamo.
Fellow Negaan Husqvarna Factory Racing rider Lucas Coenen finished a solid third and fourth in both motos, leaving him fourth overall at the end of the weekend. Coenen himself admitted that he had difficulty getting his machine to work to his advantage on the deep tracks in Spain. Despite this, Coenen showed an impressive pace in the battle with rival Simon Längenfelder throughout the second heat. When the checkered flag fell, Coenen ended the weekend in fourth overall, which also moved him up to fourth place in the championship.
Kay de Wolf: "I worked really hard this weekend for this result – especially in the second moto. Qualifying went really great on Saturday with a dominant win, but on Sunday the pace was really high. At the start of the first moto I was dropped to sixth place, but I tried to keep calm and get back to the front. It felt great to win back to back after Argentina!”
“At the start of the second moto I had to let Andrea pass; he was in very good shape. In the last few laps I wanted to push and overtake him, but I made way too many mistakes. The track didn't allow me to be as fast as I wanted! It was hard, but we did it! I can't thank the team enough – I've worked really hard for these results, so it's a pleasure to get championship points in return. I'm definitely looking forward to Sardina now!"
Lucas Coenen: "The weekend wasn't exactly as planned – but it wasn't bad either. The warm-up on Saturday was good, but I struggled a bit with the bike set-up. In the qualifying race I came from the back and finished in P4. On Sunday the warm-up went well, but in the first moto I had difficulty with the start. I did my best and eventually finished third. I tried to compete with Simon (Längenfelder) – but it was difficult to pass him.”
“In the second moto I messed up my start, so I tried to get back as quickly as possible. I did a few good laps, but only finished fourth. I missed the podium and I'm angry about that! Now we have some work to do leading up to Sardinia – and then we'll get back to fighting!"
