Todd Kellett wins Enduro del Verano in Argentina
Yesterday the second race was held in the context of the FIM Sand Races World Cup. The Enduro del Verano in Argentina was won by Todd Kellett. He also won the first race of this championship in Le Touquet. Amandine Verstappen became the winner among the ladies.
Twenty-six-year-old Kellett taught sand racing and won by almost forty-two seconds after six laps of the full twelve-and-a-half kilometer course. Frenchman Camille Chapeliere had to settle for second place for the second time this weekend, thirty-five seconds ahead of his compatriot Maxime Sot who improved on his fifth place from Saturday to complete the podium.
Lars Van Berkel (Honda), who was Kellett's closest competitor at the start of the day, finished the race sixth behind the French duo of guest driver Adrien Van Beveren (Honda) and Jeremy Hauquier (Honda). Van Berkel was in a nice fifth place when he jumped on top of a fallen rider and had to continue with a painful elbow. He ultimately finished third, but there could have been more. The result sees Kellett extend his championship lead with four races remaining.
Amandine Verstappen maintained her unbeaten record in the women's class with another brilliant performance. Reigning champion Mathilde Denis of France equaled her title rival's total of five laps on the ferociously fast course, but was just over forty seconds behind at the checkered flag. “It's my first time here, so it was a completely new experience,” said Verstappen. “Great terrain and very fast. The sand is different compared to races in France and is packed a little harder.”
André Vossius from Sint-Truiden also traveled to Argentina to participate in the fast sand race, he was able to finish just like in Le Touquet. He finished 348th out of 520 motorcycles registered and plans to compete in the full six-race championship. His helper and former quad rider Danny Vandendijck from Hasselt was convinced on the spot to participate with the quads and promptly finished the race in 206th place of the 400 motorcycles that started.
Competitors will now have to wait until autumn before the 2024 FIM Sand Races World Cup resumes with round three, the infamous three-hour Weston Beach Race in Britain on October 13.
