MC Lille loses environmental permit and has to stop activities
Another bolt from the blue in motocross country: MC Lille is the subject of a complaint from some local residents and Natuurpunt and must immediately stop its activity. Training is no longer allowed.
It is the Council for Permit Disputes that annulled the environmental permit because, according to local residents, the noise standards specified in the permit granted at the end of 2022 were not strict enough. Minister of the Environment Zuhal Demir had then granted an environmental permit for 7 years despite protests from Natuurpunt and some local residents.
The circuit has existed since the 70s and is located next to the Kindernouw nature reserve. Two local residents now went to the Council for Permit Disputes because, according to them, the Flemish government was unlawfully allowing more flexible noise standards. The proximity of a nature reserve is also a problem according to the Council.
Jef Leysen is the chairman of MC Lille and was informed today about the withdrawal of the environmental permit. The result is that the motocross circuit on Rooverstraat must close with immediate effect. It is not known what steps need to be taken now, but it currently looks like MC Lille will have to submit a completely new application.
