VIDEO: A first opinion about the electric Stark Varg
The Swedish-Spanish electric motocross rider Stark Varg was introduced to the motocross world with great fanfare on December 14, 2021. With impressive figures, clear promotional talk from founder Anton Wass and a sophisticated media campaign, no one could escape one of the most impressive introductions of a dirt bike ever.
But what remains of all these claims and figures after two years? Stark Future, the company behind the Stark Varg, experienced production and delivery problems, but the first copies were eventually delivered. It meant that everyone who managed to get one was soon doing test laps on a motocross track. YouTube is now full of it.
What do the owners think of the Stark Varg now? We went through all these videos and found this one from Dirt Bike Mag. They provide a realistic vision of the Varg's capabilities. In short, most test riders think the electric crosser is a nice machine that is making a really nice debut in the motocross world. It steers sharply, feels very light (despite being heavier than a 450F) and is very balanced.
The Varg cannot be compared to a crosser equipped with a combustion engine, it is just a completely different concept. The impressive figures that Stark Future came up with are not fully realized. These may be achieved with additional development, but currently the Stark Varg b.v. not finishing an MXGP series. According to the makers of the video, the battery would only survive for 20 to 25 minutes in the fast pace of a World Cup match. Then we are not talking about a competition in the heavy sand of Lommel.
When the Varg is set to maximum power, the test riders say the machine is frighteningly fast and almost unusable on an average motocross track. The setting with the equivalent of a tuned 450F, on the other hand, was experienced as much more pleasant.
Electric driving has pros and cons. According to some, it would be the death blow to motocross, others see electric motocross as an opportunity to keep existing circuits open now that they are coming under pressure from noise pollution. The fact is that if you want to spend a full afternoon training on the Varg, you will still have to bring gasoline for your power generator. In any case, the electric motocross bikes will come, especially because the major manufacturers are all investing in this technology. Last weekend HRC Honda came up with an electric one for the first time CR in competition and that says a lot about the intentions of the manufacturer from Japan.
Stark Future is currently busy with further software development and obtaining licenses to use the Varg in competition.
