Maximilian Werner takes a resounding victory in Lierop
A perfect day for Maximilian Werner because the German managed to master the KNMV Dutch MX Opener 125cc. The Fantic rider was fastest in qualifying and subsequently did not tolerate anyone around him during both heats. Maximilian Ernecker (3-2) and Gyan Doensen (4-3) were allowed to climb onto the podium of MAC Lierop.
While there is still a large line of visitors in front of the cash register, the starting gate for the first 125cc round falls. Werner had some difficult matches earlier this season in Italy. He was doing very well in Lierop and came out of the first corner as leader ahead of Lotte van Drunen, Britt Jans-Beken, Lynn Valk and Roan Tolsma. The ladies see Tolsma pass in the initial phase of the race, but the Husqvarna rider crashes in the third laps. Kasimir Hinderson takes over second place, about ten seconds behind the leader. The Finn will ride for Team Motovation Motorsport in the upcoming Dutch Masters of Motocross championship. Last week Hinderson won the international competition at Hawkstone Park but today things didn't go his way. After almost eight minutes of the game he has to leave and Doensen takes over second place. The Limburger is making his debut in this class and he has clearly made progress this past winter. Under the guidance of Bas Vaessen, Doensen manages to make a big impression. He manages to hold on to second place for three laps, but then Damien Knuiman and Ernecker pass. The rider from Wijchen does not let the Austrian get any closer. Knuiman crosses the finish line second ahead of the F4E Racing driver. Doensen is good for fourth place ahead of Irishman Cole McCullough, who has started a private team with support from Milwaukee Tools.
When the starting gate for the second heat of the day opens in 25 minutes and one lap, it is Werner again with the best start. The 17-year-old rider comes out of the first round with a safe lead and now wins by 'only' 16 seconds. Ernecker rode in second place for the entire race and he was able to hold onto this position until the checkered flag. Doensen started the race in around fifteenth place, but halfway through the race he took over third place from Valk. The WZ Racing driver comes third and is even catching up with Ernecker. McCullough is now good for fourth place ahead of Douwe Vanmechgelen. The VM Racing driver has had a number of nice battles, but due to his beach racing experience gained last winter, he managed to make up no fewer than four places in the last three rounds.
The Dutch Masters of Motocross starts in two weeks. The first race in the series of three will be held on March 19 at the Harfsen circuit. The competitions in Markelo and Oldebroek will follow later in the season.
