VIDEO: Ricky Carmichael doubles everyone in Millville
In this retro video we return to the 2006 AMA Nationals. Ricky Carmichael won the first heat in Millville but then the heavens opened. Let's say that this series was the American version of what Stefan Everts showed in Foxhill during the “Naties” of 1998.
Midway through the season, Carmichael had a big points lead, but Stewart regained some courage and won an epic match in Washougal. The next race was in Millville. In the first moto, Stewart and Chad Reed quickly took the lead and Carmichael worked his way up to third place. Stewart crashed and later Reed's exhaust fell off causing him to lose a lot of power on the track. Carmichael took the lead and won the moto.
Mother Nature took control during the break. A massive storm hit the track midway through the final Lites 250 moto of the day, and the Millville track was a muddy mess by the time the 450 class had to hit the track for moto two.
Carmichael grabbed an all-important holeshot for Stewart and stayed clean while the rest of the field immediately had to take off their goggles. For example, Reed had to rush to the pits for new gloves and goggles, and soon Carmichael had him on a lap. David Vuillemin managed to take over second place. Stewart put on another unintentional show by dropping far off the track, taking a run-up and trying to blast his way to the top. He crashed again. The race was now a chaotic mess and a relatively small but very slippery uphill trap trapped almost everyone.
Vuillemin, who still came in second, now had Carmichael in his wake. RC4 reportedly drove 20 seconds per lap faster than the rest. With a few laps to go, Carmichael had hit the wheel of David Vuillemin. The fans started shouting, and then he passed Vuillemin, doubling the entire field. The fans went completely crazy and realized that they had just experienced a piece of motocross history.
