WSX GP Australia: Roczen world champion
Superstar Ken Roczen was the absolute favorite for the first World Supercross World Championship title of the WSX era. In Cardiff Ken still had to give his thumbs up to wildcard driver Eli Tomac, in Melbourne the German had to finish second after Joey Savatgy. With Roczen, WSX certainly has a very prestigious first world champion.
Roczen, who plays for the Australian Honda Genuine, clearly felt happy in Melbourne. The former MX2 world champion was the fastest in Superpole and he continued that trend in race 1.
Roczen out of category
K-Roc took the lead in the WSX opening race with an almost five-second lead over Joey Savatgy (Rock Ware Racing). Thanks to Justin Brayton (Honda), Vince Friese (Honda) and Dean Wilson (Honda), the top five turned almost completely red. Only Savatgy (Kawasaki) wasn't on a CRF!
Bad luck for Roczen, Savatgy benefits
Once again, Ken Roczen drove to a cannon start. However, the sympathetic German could not finish the job this time! Due to a flat tire, the #94 had to be retired, giving Joey Savatgy the lead and the victory. Savatgy eventually crossed the finish line 4 seconds ahead of Justin Brayton (Honda) and Vince Friese (Honda). Roczen now did not get further than 15th place.
From the European side, Anthony Bourdon (5th) and Jordi Tixier (6th) were also doing well.
Two out of three for Savatgy
One crash in Cardiff may have ruined Savatgy's bid for the world title. In the ultimate race of the 2022 World Supercross Championship, the three-time AMA SX winner once again came out on top. Roczen was now second, one and a half seconds behind his rival. At a considerable distance, Josh Hill (Yamaha), Dean Wilson (Honda) and Vince Friese (Honda) finished third, fourth and fifth respectively.
