Crucial GP victory World Cup leader Geerts
Tom Vialle arrived in Loket as World Cup leader. Now title rival Jago Geerts can compete with the red leader plate in his home GP in Lommel next weekend. Thanks to a nice victory in race 2 - after a direct duel with Vialle - and a 3rd place in the opener, he kept Thibault Benistant (1-4) and Simon Längenfelder (2-3) behind him
The first MX2 round of the Czech GP was won convincingly by Geerts' Yamaha teammate Benistant. Simon Längenfelder came second ahead of Jago Geerts.
Polesiter Benissant took the holeshot ahead of Längenfelder, Guyon, Rubini and Geerts. Although Tom Vialle narrowly avoided a crash in the first corner, he did lose valuable places after contact with Andrea Adamo.
However, Vialle released his demons and quickly came back from P16 to P7. Still, the ex MX2 world champion had a hard time getting into his rhythm. In just about one lap he had to pass De Wolf, Adamo, Everts and Haarup.
Leader Benistant retained control but still had to watch his step for a long time. After all, GasGas factory driver Simon Längenfelder had set his teeth and was not going to let himself be driven away. Metronome Benistant eventually strung the clear laps together to build up a buffer of more than 5 seconds. A strong Kevin Horgmo took advantage of a late mistake by Rubini to finish 4th.
Kay De Wolf (photo above) and Liam Everts, who started 9th and 10th respectively, finished 6th and 7th respectively after a solid heat. Kay Karssemakers came in 20th. It was a difficult match for World Cup rookies Lucas Coenen (photo above) and Sacha Coenen. They finished 22nd and 23rd.
Geerts puts the finishing touches
Geerts took his first holeshot of the season in the restart. The Balenaar had Vialle, Lëngenfelder, Facchetti and Jan Pancar behind him. Behind the leaders there was chaos. Liam Everts crashed at the start and was only able to continue his way in 27th.
A little later in the opening lap, Andrea Adamo, among others, crashed, delaying several riders. Vialle was given the lead almost immediately due to a mistake by Geerts. Jago still maintained the connection and systematically increased the pressure. Just after half the race, the Frenchman went too wide just before driving up to the pit lane. Geerts took advantage and controlled despite Vialle's insistence! The difference at the finish was barely two seconds.
Längenfelder was once again able to demonstrate his regularity. The young German remained third throughout the race, which ultimately gave him a second consecutive final podium. Kevin Horgmo, who finished fifth, also continued the trend of the first heat. Kay Karssemakers closed Loket with an 18th place (20-18) in the final standings.
Kay De Wolf climbed nicely from outside the top 10 to P7. However, the catch-up race of the race was done by Liam Everts. The Diga Procross KTM rider finished 9th. What compatriot Lucas Coenen did not succeed in race one, he now succeeded. Lucas sent his BT Racing Husky to P19 - just after Kay Karssemakers - and thus collected his first World Championship points. Booking a top 15 ranking in a Grand Prix at the age of 20 is very rare!
In the World Cup standings, Jago Geerts now leads with 8 points ahead of Tom Vialle. The balance of power in the top 5 remains unchanged, but Thibault Benistant is within 11 points of Mikkel Haarup. Next weekend the blood-curdling duel between the two fighting cocks will continue in the sandbox of Lommel where the GP of Flanders will take place.
