Triumph buys OSET!
The British 'Triumph Motorcycles' has taken over OSET, also British. OSET which has its head office in East Sussex is one of the more important players and pioneers when we talk about quality electric motorcycles for children and even now adults.
Where brands such as Honda, KTM and Husqvarna now try to entice your child to try motocross through their electric entry-level models. Ian Smith, the founder of OSET, was already working on building an electric children's motorbike in 2004. One for his son who turned out to be a real petrolhead at the age of 6 months! Father Ian, however, wanted his most valuable asset, his child, not to have to spend four or five years on a gasoline-powered motorcycle. The warm engine and exhaust, the fact that second-hand motorcycles for that age category are often either complete racing machines or old barely working engines, all led him to work with Mike Buchholz to build an electric entry-level model for both novice motocross and trail riders. -pilots.
Just over six years later, the OSET received the product of the year award from “Dirt Rider magazine” and just over 12 years later in 2022, the brand has already sold more than 40.000 motorcycles. For Triumph, this purchase has several facets. The first facet is that OSET manufactures their own drivetrain, etc., this know-how can be an interesting added value for Triumph if the brand wants to use its legendary name with 'balance bikes' such as the StaCyc or the Elektrode recently released in America by Kawasaki. The brand can also use the know-how in possible future road versions. In addition, it naturally wants to develop a new generation of motorcyclists who will buy a Triumph 'when they grow up' to ride to work or as a means of relaxation.
OSET, a strong name in the electric motorcycle world, will retain its name despite the takeover. As a result, it seems likely to us that Triumph will make Elktro children's motocross bikes themselves, although this cannot be ruled out, now that they are also working on an enduro and motocross range. It is still unknown when we can expect this.
