Cold-blooded Tim Gajser wins first series in Trentino
The first series of MXGP has just been held in the beautiful setting of the Pietramurata circuit. Gajser won this ahead of a strong Glenn Coldenhoff and Jorge Prado.
For the first time in all those years, the circuit was now driven the other way around. The holeshot was for Yamaha rider Glenn Coldenhoff. He held off Tim Gjaser and Jorge Prado in the sprint to the first corner. Beta Factory pilot Jeremy Van Horebeek started tenth.
A well-started Mitch Evans (P5) showed that he has gradually regained his old form. After a few laps, Coldenhoff and Gajser pull away from first pursuer Prado by five seconds. In lap seven, Coldenhoff hears the deep growl of Gajser's Honda getting louder and has to do everything he can to hold off the Slovenian. The Dutchman keeps a cool head for many laps, but on the eleventh lap Gajser finds a gap and takes the lead from Coldenhoff.
In the meantime, Calvin Vlaanderen and Jeremy Van Horebeek had moved up to 7de and a 8th place. Pauls Jonass, who had gotten off to a bad start, was riding a 17 at the timede cutting. Maxime Renaux got into a fight with Evans and Vlaanderen and moved up to fifth place. With three laps to go, Prado did everything he could to finish second. Coldenhoff, however, did not back down and finished second. In the meantime, Gajser had built up a nice lead and won the series by a wide margin. Prado came third.
