VLM Lommel: Sven van der Mierden most regular
The VLM/BK opener in Lommel could count on a nice field of participants. Home rider Yentel Martens (JM Honda Racing) dominated the first moto but dropped out in the restart. Final winner Sven van der Mierden (JHMX Service GasGas) had to give up on Micha-Boy De Waal in the second series, but two second places were enough for the overall victory!
It became clear during the time training that the Dutch delegation had not come to the Heeserbergen for an extra role. Micha Boy De Waal convincingly took pole ahead of Freek van der Vlist and Sven van Der Mierden. Yentel Martens came fourth fastest.
However, the same Martens turned it into a one-man show in the first series. Y-Mart was immediately at the front and systematically expanded its lead. De Wael and Van der Vlist also had a good start but soon dropped out. Van der Mierden, who started seventh, ended up in P2 after three laps. Meanwhile, the proverbial bird in the person of Yentel Martens had long since flown. Ultimately he would win by more than 36 seconds ahead of Van der Mierden, the German Stefan Ekerhold and VLM champion Jens Van Meer was best of the rest. Kay Ebben had a bad start but still managed to finish in a nice 5th place.
At the start of the second series, things immediately went wrong for Van Meer, Bielen, Leerkes and Vermijl, among others, who had fallen. Martens was already in the lead again and seemed to be heading for a repeat of series one. Mechanical bad luck decided otherwise. De Wael was thus given the lead. When the Pol Motors rider made a mistake, Van der Mierden was allowed to take over, but De Wael still recovered well after his fall and achieved a nice victory after an exciting ending. Once again Ekerold (photo below) was third ahead of Van der Vlist. Ebben was able to reach the final podium thanks to a second top-5 finish. Cedric Grobben became the best Belgian.
