Tim Gajser also wins second Grand Prix of the season!
The second Grand Prix of the season was held in Mantova, Italy, last weekend, which was once again up to Tim Gajser! The four-time world champion needed a second place in the first heat and a victory in the second heat to win the day.
At the start of the first moto it was Jorge Prado who took the holeshot. The Spaniard immediately got Tim Gajser in the neck, and both made it a more than interesting spectacle. The Spaniard on the GasGas worked hard and held off Tim Gajser in the first moto. Behind both of these fighters, the 2 MX2021 World Champion Maxime Renaux crossed the finish line in third place. The rookie thus outperformed his teammate Jeremy Seewer and Ruben Fernandez. For the lowlanders we saw Brian Bogers finish seventh and Jeremy Van Horebeek in ninth place. Brent Van Doninck and Glenn Coldenhoff finished fourteenth and seventeenth respectively.
In the second series, Henry Jacobi of the Belgian JM Honda team got off to a great start, but Tim Gajser soon got over it. The Slovenian briefly got himself into trouble due to a small mistake that left Yamaha pilot Maxime Renaux, who had meanwhile moved up to second place, breathing down his neck. However, this was only a snapshot, Tim Gajser again built a comfortable lead and won the second series by about seven seconds. This for Maxime Renaux and a very strong performing Brian Bogers! Thomas-Kjer Olsen finished fourth, holding off a whole series of Jorge Prado. The Dane eventually drove the Spaniard into such desperation that he made a mistake and only finished seventh. This is behind Jeremy Seewer in fifth place and Ruben Fernandez in sixth place. For our other lowlanders, Jeremy Van Horebeek achieved an impressive eighth place. Brent Van Doninck and Glenn Coldenhoff both fell outside the top ten again with thirteenth and fourteenth places.
There was no doubt about the victory of the day: Tim Gajser totaled around 47 points, next to him on the podium he had Maxime Renaux with 42 points and Jorge Prado with 39 points. Standing Construct Husqvarna pilot Brian Bogers stood out in fourth overall with 34 points. Jeremy Van Horebeek finished eighth overall with 25 points. In eleventh place with 15 points we found Brent Van Doninck, and in seventeenth place with 11 points overall was Glenn Coldenhoff. For both Brent Van Doninck and Glenn Coldenhoff this is a Grand Prix to quickly forget.
The road to the MXGP world title is still littered with thousands of pitfalls, but we can already conclude that Tim Gajser is 12 points ahead of Jorge Prado and 17 points ahead of Maxime Renaux.
