Gasjer gets the win
The very first round of the 2022 MXGP season was certainly a fascinating spectacle. Tim Gajser was given the victory due to an error by leader Jeremy Seewer. Monster Energy Yamaha teammates Seewer and Renaux finished second and third. The lowlanders had to settle for a supporting role. Boger, Coldenhoff and Van Horebeek finished 7th, 9th and 10th respectively.
In a breathtaking sprint, Jorge Prado seemed to narrowly hold off GasGas colleague Alberto for the holeshot. Seewer, Coldenhoff, pole sitter Maxime Renaux and Ruben Fernandez also had a good start. Although Coldenhoff hung third for quite a while, he would gradually lose ground due to sore arms.
However, Fernadez made a mistake and would soon disappear from the race. Prado's empire also did not last long. Seewer took control in the second round. Prado hung on for a while, but the real danger came from further away. Tim Gajser had a poorer start but successively beat Forato, Renaux, Coldenhoff and Prado.
Even grandmaster Gajser was not clear and Seewer seemed to get some breathing space when he was chased by the HRC Honda leader. In the end, however, the Swiss made a slip himself, allowing 'Tiga' to win easily. The top-5 was completed by MXGP rookie Renaux in third ahead of Prado and a surprisingly strong Jed Beaton (F&H Racing Kawasaki) who also made his MXGP debut. The second MXGP round will take place at 17 p.m. our time.
