First race, first victory for Geerts
Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 rider Jago Geerts started the new season with a victory. The Balenaar won the MX2 race in Alghero, Italy and then finished third (making him the first MX2 rider) in the Superfinal.
Jago Geerts was the only Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MX2 rider at the start in Sardinia. After all, teammate Thibault Benistant is still recovering from a knee injury. Geerts, who is already in good shape after a training internship in the United States, was clearly the fastest MX2 rider on the track. In the time training, the vice world champion was almost three seconds faster than his first pursuer. And that dominance also quickly became clear in the MX2 race. Geerts took the holeshot, immediately opened up a gap and then controlled the race until the finish. “Although it was very difficult at the end with the many doubles,” said Geerts. “I had to slalom the whole time.”
In the Super Final, Geerts had to compete against the more powerful MXGP bikes on his MX2 machine. The Balenaar got off to a good start on his YZ250FM and dove into the wheel of Seewer and Gajser into the first corner. Jago had to let Beaton pass in the initial phase. Not for long, though. Geerts in turn jumped over the Australian and even almost completely closed the gap on Gajser and Seewer. “But then I made a mistake, which allowed those two to open another gap,” says Geerts. “But the driving itself went well. It was especially nice to compete again. Winning is always fun, but of course it is and remains only a preparation race.”
