Marc de Reuver: “Wanting to win is a very dangerous trait”
Before Marc de Reuver made waves as a “trener” for Pauls Jonass and F&H Racing, among others, he was a sensation on the track himself. On his day, 'Reuf' could not be beaten by anything or anyone. The Benelux GP in Lierop in 2008 was such a day. For the Eindhovens Dagblad, Marc returned to that memorable weekend in the Herselse woods.
Marc de Reuver, who then played for Honda Martin, had broken his ankle bone earlier that year. This required a minimum of five weeks of recovery. He would miss the MX1 GPs of South Africa and Lommel. But the born Amstelvener mocked all laws.
“The doctor said I couldn't drive. He wanted to drive, but that wasn't possible. Oh well. An injection in the ankle, and I had a shoe made of plastic. Couldn't move my foot in that shoe, my toes a little.” Against all logic, De Reuver finished fourth overall on the Lommel sand circuit.
More than a month later, Lierop was on the program in the MX1. Once again a sand circuit, on which Dutch crossers can usually handle well. “Lierop was completely my thing,” said De Reuver, who had already won the Italian GP that season. The weekend in Lierop started excellently because Marc took pole on Saturday. He was almost 1,5 seconds faster than Ken De Dycker, Steve Ramon was third at almost 2 seconds. That Saturday turned out to be a good harbinger for the next day.
