Is there a future for the circuit in Lierneux?
A year ago, circuit operator André Mathieu was faced with the closure of the circuit in Lierneux. However, he did not give up and organized a demonstration against the decision. Politicians became aware of the problem and took action.
The lack of infrastructure for motocross and for the training of young athletes has become an incredibly big problem in Belgium. In Wallonia there are now bright spots, such as the start of issuing a permit in Gouy-lez-Piéton and now progress is also being made in the “Lierneux” file. The circuit of operator André Mathieu is located close to Baraque de Fraiture.
André Mathieu: “More than a year has passed and you don't even know how many hundreds of messages of support I have received every month, as well as the requests and questions regarding the reopening of the circuit. Since our demonstration just after the closure of the circuit, the political world has reacted immediately. Prime Minister Jeholet called me immediately and we had a long conversation about the lack of infrastructure for motocross and the training of young riders. He immediately became aware of the problem and promised to support the project by promising me a grant and by contacting Minister Crucke, Minister of Sports Infrastructure, to join the project.
Now, after a year, after pages of files, many meetings and countless telephone conversations, the promised subsidies have been delivered and the impact assessment for the environmental permit is in the final phase. It is important for our sport and for the environment that we have regulated and safe infrastructures to train our young people instead of letting them practice their sport everywhere in the wild. The project will be presented to the public on September 28, 2021.”
