Zonta wins both heats, Cambre fifth in Maggiora
The first match of the European Champion Open was won by Filippo Zonta. The 23-year-old Martin Racing rider won both heats at the Maggiora circuit. Nicolas Dercourt (2-3) is second ahead of Davide De Bortoli (4-2). The best Laaglanders is Jilani Cambré, the Yamaha rider is fifth in the daily rankings after crossing the finish line in seventh and sixth. Micha Boy de Waal (17-12) scores both heats despite a number of falls. Kay Ebben (31-17) scored once, as did Kevin van Geldorp (19-22) and Nick Leerkes (22-20).

In the first round, Dercourt takes the best start, narrowly ahead of De Waal, who quickly takes over the lead. Then the Husqvarna rider makes a mistake, giving the Frenchman the lead again. De Bortoli then joins Dercourt and the Italian takes the lead. He also makes a mistake and that puts Dercourt back in the lead. After more than ten minutes of the match, Zonta connects with Dercourt and he is passed for the third time in this match. Zonta, from the Verona region, no longer relinquishes the lead and wins on his father's birthday. Dercourt comes even closer in the final phase, but due to a mistake he loses connection. The Frenchman comes second ahead of the Italians Simone Croci, De Bortoli and Alessandro D'Angelo. Cambré does well in seventh place, De Waal crashes again, meaning he does not get further than 17th place. Kevin van Geldorp takes two points, the Team VIP Lounge rider crosses the finish line in 19th. The other KNMV riders are unable to get into the points.

Earlier in the day, Jeff Oxelmark did not get further than twelfth place. The Swede takes the lead in the second round ahead of Adrien Escoffier and Matej Jaros. In the first corner Zonta and De Waal collide. The 26-year-old rider ends up in the backfield and crashes again in the first lap. In the first full lap, Oxelmark briefly loses the lead to Jaros, but the Croat quickly loses this position. The top three are gaining distance, but Dercourt quickly manages to close the gap. The Frenchman from Team SR-MotoBlouz-Honda is pushed to the front by Zonta. With ten minutes to go, Zonta takes the lead after which he distances himself. Dercourt tries to keep the very strong De Bortoli behind him, but that doesn't work. The Italian benefits from a mistake and in the final phase he joins Zonta. This one can withstand the pressure and therefore also wins the second heat. De Bortoli crosses the finish line second ahead of Dercourt and his teammate Escoffier. Croci completed the top five this moto. De Waal finishes twelfth and Kay Ebben scores four points by crossing the finish line in seventeenth. The last point goes to Nick Leerkes, he crosses the finish line in 20th.
Next time:
This championship will continue in three weeks, when the points will be distributed at 'Circuit De Witte Ruysheuvel' in Oss.
