Cavallara MX1: Lupino win, Cairoli takes no risks
On the beautifully hard Cross Park Cavallara, championship leader Alessandro Lupino (Marchetti KTM) only needed a 2-1 score for the overall victory in the 4th round of the Campionato Italiano Prestige. The returning Tony Cairoli (Red Bull KTM) won race 1, but chose to miss the second race. The Red Bull KTM rider hurt his hand at home on Friday.
Pole on Saturday and an albeit narrow victory over Lupino should reassure Cairoli somewhat in the run-up to the first MXGP next weekend. For the nine-time world champion, it was only his first preparation race after having knee surgery this winter.
“On Friday I suffered a cut on my hand when I tried to tie a garbage bag at home. Absolutely nothing serious, but I just didn't want to risk the wound not closing properly. That's why I chose not to start the second series,” said Cairoli.
In the second race there was no match for Lupino. The likeable former youth world champion had more than 15 seconds ahead of Davide De Bortoli. Veteran David Philippaerts (Ghidinelli Yamaha) was again on the podium (3-4). He is second in the standings.
