Dakar Rally: Benavides wins stage 5 despite crash
The fifth stage towards Al Qaisumah was packed with difficult phases in terms of navigation. It always turns out to be a disadvantage for those who have to start the stage first. The Argentinian Kevin Benavides proved to be the fastest today and won stage 5 ahead of Nacho Cornejo and Toby Price.
However, Benavides was not lucky because he suffered an injury to his nose in a nasty crash. However, the man of the day was Toby Price. He started the stage with a deficit of 13 minutes and at the finish he had reduced this to 1 minute 20 seconds and thus took third place. Xavier de Soultrait finished sixth today and has already relinquished the lead in the rankings. That honor now belongs to Kevin Benavides.
Walter Roelants rode his Husqvarna across the finish line at a 70th takes place and that is another very solid result for the Kempen resident who is riding the Dakar Rally to raise money for the non-profit organization “To Walk Again”. Paul Spierings turned 43th and his Dutch companion Olaf Harmsen finished 65thth. Tomorrow the ride from Al Qaisumah to Ha'il is on the menu. This is over 448 km of soft sand and promises to be one of the most difficult stages of this Dakar. Good lighting seems to be a must because some riders will finish in the dark.
