Dakar Rally: Brabec wins, Cornejo is forced to retire!
The Dakar Rally is alive with spectacular plot twists these days. Today the stage from Neom to Alula was on the menu. The Chilean “Nacho” Cornejo crashed en route but was able to continue his way. On arrival he was examined by the doctors and they banned him from starting, which means that yet another top player disappears from the race.
Cornejo already lost quite a bit of time after his crash and had to give in more than 17 minutes to his teammate Ricky Brabec who was able to win this stage. In the standings, Kevin Benavides (Honda) is now in the lead, with a 51 second difference between his teammate Ricky Brabec. KTM rider Sam Sunderland is ranked third, 10:36 minutes behind the leader.
Laia Sanz, the lady of the GasGas Factory Team, finished 29th todayth. Walter Roelants, who participates for the organization “To Walk Again”, came in at 61st place. He suffers from a painful knee and an inflamed wrist and still has to grit his teeth for two days. Our northern neighbor Paul Spierings went very fast today and scored a 24th cutting. Olaf Harmsen finished 66thth. Tomorrow there is the penultimate stage that starts in Alula and arrives in Yanbu. 464 km are put under the wheels. The ride is shortened due to predicted weather conditions, but it continues to "eat dunes" along the way.
