Technology: the undeniable advantages of anhydrous coolant!
Waterless coolant is different from regular coolant because it does not contain water. Voila! Waterless coolant consists of the same base glycols as regular coolant but works very differently without the water. There are a few waterless coolant companies that manufacture the product but only one brand is heavily involved in the motocross industry and ships worldwide. That brand is Evans Waterless Coolants. We are taking a closer look at this product!
The boiling point of waterless coolant is 180° degrees Celsius and it freezes at – 40° degrees. Instead of expanding when frozen – like water – the volume of the coolant decreases. So your motorcycle must already be parked in a very cold spot in Antarctica to freeze.
Waterless coolant additives do not deteriorate like regular coolant. Stable additives are added to the waterless coolant so that the coolant never goes bad. It doesn't matter whether the fluid is still in its packaging or in your radiator, it should never be replaced.
Boiling point
Anhydrous coolant does not build up steam pressure in the system. There is a moderate pressure build-up of seven percent fluid expansion. This means that if you open the radiator cap when the coolant is hot, only a few tablespoons of fluid may bubble up. In other words: there is not enough pressure so that you do not have to worry about burns to your hands and/or face. It must be said that if there is still residual water in the system (more than 3 to 5 percent), steam pressure will still be created.
If your waterless coolant in your system is too low and you don't have extra waterless coolant with you on the motocross, don't worry. You can add water or regular coolant to the system without any problems. When water is added, it behaves just like regular coolant and loses the benefits of the waterless coolant. If you want to enjoy the benefits of anhydrous coolant again afterwards, you must drain everything and refill it with the correct product.
Prep Fluid
Evans has brought into circulation a so-called “Prep Fluid”. You use this hygroscopic cleaning agent to clean a cooling system with conventional cooling water and to prepare it for the use of waterless coolant.
A number of waterless coolants corrode with the addition of as little as 3 percent water. A waterless coolant that meets the ASTM standard can contain up to 10 percent water and still retain its anti-corrosion properties. Evans Waterless Coolant still protects with up to 60 percent water. However, the added water ensures that the coolant cannot be used for life and becomes bad after a few years.
In tough races where the terrain is muddy, it is possible for the mud to clog the radiators, restricting airflow and engine cooling. Normal coolant will then start to boil. If you do not let the engine cool down and continue to drive, you will damage the engine. With waterless coolant the engine will continue to run well, even with limited air flow. It is possible that the plastic parts in the cooling system, such as the impeller (KTM) or fittings that hold the radiator hoses together, can melt. If these parts are made of plastic and you drive in extreme conditions for a long time, replace them with metal parts. These sets are made by, among others, Boyesen.

When you get steam bubbles in the cylinder head passages, the vapor pushes the fluid away from the metal at that location, raising the temperature of the metal by hundreds of degrees. This causes detonation, a deformed cylinder head and leaking head gaskets. These hot spots do not develop over time Evans waterless coolant, because the waterless liquid is always in contact with the metal to cool it.
To fully utilize the benefits of waterless coolant, the cooling system must be completely drained or contain a maximum of three percent water. The best way to ensure this is to remove the drain bolt and then pull off the hose at the pump. Now blow compressed air into the filler opening of the radiator. Reinstall the hose and drain bolt and pour one or two cups of waterless coolant or prep fluid into the radiator. Then drain it and blow out the cooling system again for final assembly and filling the coolant.
