Will Tim Gajser leave for the USA in 2021?
When Tim Gajser started motocross, he and his father didn't even have the gas to go racing. Today he is already a three-time world motocross champion. He is a factory driver at HRC Honda and scored an excellent fifth place in the recently held Monster Energy Cup in Las Vegas without any significant preparation. He now has his own sunglasses collection. But he has another dream of his own: racing in America.
For Tim Gajser, receptions and promotional activities continue until after the end of the season. That's an obligation when you become a world-class star. “My dream when I was a child was to succeed in this sport, in motocross. After I signed with HRC, my first dreams came true“. Now that he is a world champion, he dreams of Supercross.
More aggressive, with more details
On his experiences in the Monster Energy Cup this year: “In supercross the tracks are not as wide, so the driving and overtaking is much more aggressive, with more details. So in the first heat I was even a bit surprised when I came out of the starting gate in second place. Everyone just came to me. You really have to be very aggressive” explains Gajser about his second supercross experience. Two years ago he finished the race in Las Vegas with a fall, but this year he finished seventh in the first series and fourth in the second and third series.
Honda gets priority
He still has a one-year contract with Honda to race in the MXGP class. For 2021, however, the switch to Supercross is quite realistic. The talks have already started. “Many teams in the US are very satisfied. No one even expected me to do such a good race after so little training. There is definitely a lot of interest. But Honda will have priority in the decision. They were the first. When no one believed in me, they saw the potential in me. We have grown together. Together we won three world titles. The decision could come this winter".
Living in the US?
You are a humble boy from a village called Pačk in Slovenia. Do you think you could one day live in Las Vegas or Los Angeles? “The supercross season runs from January to mid-May, followed by the American outdoor races until September. Given the preparations, I would live in the US for at least 10 months a year. It's a completely different world. Everything in the US is much bigger. People are much more subdued. I will say I could get used to it. "
