Britt Jans-Beken takes full advantage in Groesbeek
Britt Jans-Beken (Ned) has won the third competition of the IMBA ladies in Groesbeek. The Lakerveld Racing driver won all three heats at the d'n Hoek circuit. Second place went to Brenda Wagemans with three times the second plate. The Belgian remains in the lead in the European Championship. Amber Simons (Ned) also entered the podium with three third place finishes in the heats. Places four and five were also occupied by Dutch ladies with Cynthia Swets and Kayleen van Dam. For podium candidate Chelsea Gowland (GBR), the day ended on the sixth lap of the first heat. While overtaking a straggler, she fell and remained injured for the remaining heats.
First heat
It was Simons who took the lead after the first meters ahead of Wagemans, Jans-Beken, Swets and Gowland. Wagemans took over the lead on the first lap. In the next round Simons also had to let Jans-Beken pass. A few seconds behind this trio, Gowland passed Swets and finished fourth. Jans-Beken continued her advance and took the lead from Wagemans on the third lap. Simons slowly but surely saw both Jans-Beken and Wagemans driving away from her. In the sixth round Gowland fell and had to abandon the fight. This put Swets in fourth place for a while, but had to give this up to van Dam in the next round. Jans-Beken withstood Wagemans' pressure and was flagged first. Wagemans crossed the finish line in second place, followed by Simons. Well behind Simons, Van Dam took fourth place, keeping Swets behind him.
Second heat
It was now Simons who was the best ahead of Wagemans, Swets, Charlotte Hall and Amber Everts. It was Jans-Beken who gave chase and quickly passed Everts, Hall and Swets to join Wagemans and Simons. In the fourth lap Simons had to give up the lead to Wagemans and she also saw Jans-Beken pass on the following lap. In the battle for the heat victory, Wagemans and Jans-Beken again rode away from Simons. It was once again Jans-Beken who passed Wagemans and took the heat victory. Simons again achieved third place, followed by Swets, well behind. Fifth place went to Van Dam, who was rewarded with a nice catch-up race from the back.
Third heat
Jans-Beken now took the lead from the start ahead of Simons, Swets, Wagemans and Hall. Wagemans passed Swets on the first lap and was once again in the battle for the lead. On the second lap, van Dam passed Hall to finish fifth. The front three ladies battled wheel to wheel for laps to win the round. Simons saw Wagemans pass in the fifth lap, who then put full pressure on Jans-Beken. However, it was again Jans-Beken who managed to keep the door closed and walked away with the heat victory for Wagemans. Simons managed to keep up for almost the entire heat, but ultimately had to be satisfied with third place again. Well behind her, Swets crossed the finish line in fourth ahead of van Dam.
In the standings of the 2019 European Women's Championship, Wagemans and Jans-Beken seem to be deciding who will be the champion. Wagemans starts the last match on September 22 in Amriswil, Switzerland with a 19-point lead over Jans-Beken. For the time being, Simons and Swets appear to be deciding who will take the last place on the podium. Gowland seems to have no chance of winning the podium due to her fall and two DNS losses.
