'Iron' Mike Keuben and Lars de Laat take a surprising podium spot during IMBA European Championship sidecar in Wohlen!
Mike Keuben and Lars de Laat finished third in Wohlen, Switzerland, during the first IMBA European Championship Sidecar of 2019. The duo was only ahead of the German-speaking Belgian Closhe and the Swiss Heinzer, who won in Wohlen. A miraculous achievement considering the fact that Mike Keuben had to leave the battlefield seriously injured in February. However, 'Iron' Mike Keuben came back faster and stronger than ever thought possible. He and his baking player Lars de Laat deservedly were applauded by the thousands of spectators in Switzerland after achieving third place in the daily total.
A podium place at the European Championships is in any case a great achievement, but now with a silver lining for 'Iron Mike' Keuben in particular.
In February, Keuben/De Laat flew off the sidecar and Mike Keuben was hit by the entire combination.
The damage was mainly internal. Mike Keuben's pancreas looked like an original finely made schnitzel and his intestines were so tangled that even an accomplished magician would not know what to do with it at first.
The doctors were able to say that Mike could only carefully think about racing again sometime at the end of June. And that was the most positive prognosis at that time.
On Sunday, April 14, however, 'Iron' Mike Keuben, together with baking player Lars de Laat, stood on the podium as if nothing had happened after the three European Championship Sidecar Cross heats in Wohlen, where each heat could be competed for the top spots.
Keuben/De Laat scored a truckload of points and, to everyone's surprise, are now title candidates for the 2019 European Sidecar Cross Championships.
Father and son Peter and Jarno Steegmans became the best Belgians in Wohlen with a 6th place in the final ranking.
Current champion Frank Mulders and the young Aivar van der Wiel, the son of Henry with whom Frank became champion in 2018, unfortunately did not get further than 10th place in the final standings.
