Take 5: Demi Verploegh
Last weekend, Demi Verploegh extended her contract with Team Ecomaxx for a season. We visited the Brabant team to look back at the past season and of course to look ahead to the future.
MXMag: In 2016 and 2017 you came second in the MON NK Women. This year you seemed to be going to win the title, but you failed again during the final. What happened in Meijel?
DV: “I came to the final in Meijel with a twelve-point lead. Everything went very well in the first heat and I was in the lead for a long time. However, things went wrong on the last lap, I made a big mistake and completely lost control of the bike. I crashed and had to settle for second place. So I started the last round of the year with a six-point lead. I started second but was able to make up a place later in the race. Unfortunately for me, Amber Simons passed by again a little later and she managed to win the heat and thus the title. We both had the same number of points, but she took the title because she had managed to take more heat victories.”
MXMag: The IMBA competitions went well, you came fourth in the final standings and therefore the best 2-stroke rider. How do you look back?
DV: “The IMBA Championship could have been better. The matches in Switzerland and England were good, but I am not satisfied with Belgium and Germany. I fell too many times there, made the worst starts and that led to results that I am dissatisfied with. I am the best 2-stroke rider, that's true, but I would have preferred to be on the general podium.”
MXMag: The Grand Prix in Assen was good, you came for points and you left Drenthe with ten points. That must be very satisfying?
DV: “That's absolutely right, our goal was to score at least one point. In the end I was able to get ten points to my name and I must honestly say that feels very good! I would also have liked to score points during the final in Italy, but I still think back with great satisfaction on the points from Assen.”
MXMag: What does your schedule look like in 2019?
DV: “Last weekend I extended my contract with Team Ecomaxx. I will no longer be competing at the MON, we will be riding the KNMV Cup class combined with the FIM MXW World Championship.”
MXMag: What is your goal for 2019, when will this season be a success?
DV: “For me, the KNMV competitions will be purely intended to build up competition rhythm. In MXW I hope to be in the top twenty at the end of the season. Perhaps more is possible, but in 2019 my studies come first.”
MXMag: Thank you for your time!
DV: Thank you for your interest!
