Thomas Covington and Thomas-Kjer Olsen speak!
After Thomas Covington of Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing had already come close to overall victory several times this year, the American finally scored this weekend during the eighteenth round of the MX2 World Championship in Turkey. Covington took the day's victory and secured his eighth podium finish of this season. In addition to Covington's success, Thomas Kjer Olsen also climbed the podium with a third place.
The Afyon circuit was fast and Covington felt well at home on it. He was certainly a rider to be reckoned with. In the first moto he took the holeshot and managed to win the race. In the second moto he also steered his Husqvarna FC250 through the first corner as the leader. He led the race until he crashed in the final stages. Fortunately, the damage was not too bad and he was still able to cross the finish line in third place, which was enough for the overall victory.
Two consistent results ensured that Thomas Kjer Olsen managed to achieve his eighth podium place of this season. Olsen finished fifth in the first moto but came back stronger in the second moto. He finished second and thus secured third place in the daily rankings. With these results he has also managed to consolidate his third place in the standings.
In two weeks, the penultimate race for the MX2 World Championship will be held in Assen, the Netherlands.
Thomas Covington: “I had to wait a long time for this victory. I think I should have had a few more this season. Me and my trainer Joël Roelants worked hard every week to ultimately win. It was a good Grand Prix for me. I got a good start in both motos and managed to set a good pace. After winning the first moto, I tried to ride consistently in the second moto. My motivation was to win both heats but a small mistake meant I had to settle for third place. I am very happy with my performance and I am looking forward to the next match in Assen."
Thomas-Kjer Olsen: “I am very happy with my riding here in Turkey. In the first moto I had a hard time getting into my rhythm, but for the second moto we made some small changes, which turned out better. The bike was perfect and I could ride the right lines perfectly. I was able to follow Covington and Jonass for almost the entire moto and when Covington made a mistake I moved up to second place. I am very happy with this podium finish and I want to donate it to the Rockstar Energy Husqvarna team and all the people who help me.”
