Will Jago Geerts be recovered for Assen?
Jago hopes to make his comeback in the Assen GP on September 15 and 16. The MX of Nations in Red Bud (fortunately) do not seem to be in jeopardy. Although a return to the Assen TT Circuit is realistic, team manager Marnicq Bervoets is cautious: “Maybe Jago can be there again in Assen. But only if he is completely fit. Jago is still very young, we are not going to take any risks with him.”
In Switzerland, Geerts completed the GP debut of the brand new 2019 Yamaha YZ250F after finishing second behind Thomas Covington in front of his own people at the Keiheuvel last week. After finishing 12th in the timed training, things went wrong in the qualifying competition. Jago Geerts: “I made a mistake on a jumping mountain at the beginning of the race. I rolled over and landed on my left shoulder. I immediately realized that my collarbone was broken.”
In 2014, the ex-125cc world champion had once broken his right collarbone. An operation was not necessary then, but it is now. “I already went under the knife in Herentals on Sunday. My first surgery ever. Well, that's part of our sport. The operation went well. Normally, recovery takes about three weeks. I hope to make my comeback in the Grand Prix in Assen. But only if I'm fit. I'm not going to take any unnecessary risks.”
