Solid Weckman finishes sixth in France
The fifth round of the EMX125 championship earned Emil Weckman quite a few points. Thanks to a 14-4 score, the likeable Finn finished just outside the top 5. With three laps to go, Weckman consolidated his third place in the standings.
Because Damian Kojs had suffered a knee injury in Matterley Basin, Emil Weckman was the only KTM Diga Junior Racing rider in Saint-Jean d'Angély. Emil was looking forward to it and did a good job in the timed training. The two-time EMX150 champion finished fifth in his group. In the first moto Weckman got off to a flying start. Ideally placed to enter the first corner, he was cut off by another rider. Emil had to anchor to avoid a collision and the crucial next climb did not go as planned. This was destroying the good response. Weckman managed to soften the pill by returning from the rear to twelfth place. A few mistakes at the end ultimately cost him two more positions.
The hard and sunny conditions gave way to a completely different picture on Sunday. The 'Circuit du Puy de Poursay' was extremely difficult after heavy rain. Weckman took the lead in the second race after the holeshot. He then took command in the second turn. However, the KTM Diga Junior Racing rider was unable to take advantage of his leading position. Emil ended up on the wrong track on the second lap and got stuck in the mud. Although the second series was a missed opportunity, Weckman got into a good rhythm afterwards. The quick Finn recovered his knee. Having fallen back to seventh position, he rose to fourth place at the finish. Emil also recorded the fastest lap of the race.
Emil Weckman: “In the first race I made a mistake in the climb just after the start. That set me back even further but it was typical of the first moto; I just made too many mistakes. Saturday was not my day. The second series on Sunday went much better. I was able to come back little by little to a very difficult job. So in terms of driving I was quite satisfied.”
