Disturbing disappearance of Eric Geboers
Motocross legend Eric Geboers (55) disappeared last night in the Miramar lake in Mol. After Geboers jumped out of a pleasure boat after a dog, he never came back to the surface. The search for the five-time world champion has not yielded anything yet.
The fire brigade quickly arrived on the scene and last night major resources were deployed - sonar, spotlights and divers - but the search yielded nothing. On the radio program 'The Morning' from Radio 1 (snippet from 02:51:31) stated Paul Rotthier the mayor of Mol that a fairly dramatic accident occurred last night. “A number of friends were out on a boat, including one Eric Geboers. At one point, for an unclear reason, a young dog fell overboard. He jumped into the water to save that dog. But he immediately got into trouble. Another person present also made a rescue attempt. They had to stop it very quickly, because the water is still very cold.”
“Those people immediately alerted the emergency services. We arrived on site with a number of diving teams. After almost 3 hours of searching, it stopped around 1am last night, but has now started again. Yesterday some boats searched on the instructions of the people who witnessed the accident, but these are relatively deep puddles with quite a current. Last night I was contacted Missing Persons cell led by Alain Remue. These people are now on site with more sophisticated equipment and divers and have restarted the search.”
“We must always try to remain positive but also realistic,” said the mayor. “If you have been there for so many hours - with the temperatures of the water it is now - then I think we have to prepare for the worst. We should not draw premature conclusions, but I think some realism is also necessary.” More news will follow as soon as it becomes available.
