In the picture: Gino Maes
Normally he is always busy taking beautiful pictures for us, but for once we turn the tables and put Gino Maes himself in the picture. Gino selected 10 of his nicest images especially for us, and explains why these images are so special to him. Also curious about the 10 most beautiful images (moments) of Gino Maes? Check them out now here on MXMag.
Gino Maes: I was asked by MXMag to select 10 photos that I find special, or have special meaning to me. You don't just start with that knowing that I have been taking photos since '94, first with an analogue camera and later followed by a digital camera. As a result, I have an archive of countless photos, and that certainly doesn't make choosing any easier... Ultimately, I managed to put this selection together and I am happy to share it here with you. Although they did not immediately become my most beautiful photos, they were the ones with the most special meaning for me.
1: My first photo is one of Glenn Coldenhoff for the Living For The Weekend poster. To this day I am still proud that my photo was used for this.
2: This is certainly not one of my most beautiful photos, but it has enormous meaning for me. I took this photo when I represented the American team at the Mettet Superbike. This was without a doubt one of my best Superbiker Mettet weekends so far. I've made a lot of new friends, including legendary motocross riders Broc Glover, Ron Lechien and Micky Diamond.
3: This is one that will be forever etched in my memory. Visiting the hero of my father and myself, André Malherbe. Dédé doesn't like media attention, but he wanted to make an exception for me. When I drove home again that day, I shed a tear and looked up for a moment with pride and joy. The next time I saw Andre again, he thanked me profusely and congratulated me for the result. That makes you quiet for a moment.
4: This was my first cover at The Art Of Motocross. Another photo of Glenn Coldenhoff, which I took during the GP of Portugal.
5: This photo was taken during my first ever SX race in the USA, the Monster Energy Cup in Las Vegas. The atmosphere in and around the stadium is breathtaking. You're short on eyes and time! A must to experience sometime!
6: For this photo I was asked to follow (then) Prince Philip during his visit to the MXoN in Lommel in 2012. Now due to the death of Eric Geboers, this photo once again has a special meaning.
7: This is one of a top event that took place in a beautiful setting like that of the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, namely the European version of the X Games with MX, BMX, FMX, Enduro, Skating, Rally, ...
8: A photo the way I like to take it. Arrive at the trail in the morning, find out where the special spots are and where there is a beautiful natural framing. This combined with action, lighting, etc. When seeing this photo, even Jeffrey Herlings wondered how and where I had taken it.
9: the same as 8, look for a framing and click at the right time. At every event there should be at least 1 photo on your camera that puts a smile on your face and makes you think “That's it!”
10: This is one of them during the photo shoot I did this year with the ever-likable Liam Everts. It was a new experience for me to work with studio flashes, but afterwards I was still satisfied with the result.
