Best annual performance for Micha-Boy De Waal
Many riders were eagerly awaiting the return of Agueda and Portugal to the World Motocross Championship calendar. The circuit with the typical red small surface south of Porto did not disappoint. It was also a productive weekend for Vamo Honda rider Micha-Boy De Waal. He scored points in both heats and finished joint 20th, his best GP performance of the season.
The weekend started off nicely on Friday for the popular rider from Veen because Micha celebrated his 22nd birthday in Portugal. And De Waal also had good memories of Agueda, a track where he already finished 5th in the EMX250. Moreover, the 12th Grand Prix of the season was also an excellent opportunity for the Dutch Vamo Honda pilot to show his versatility. De Waal drove his CRF250R to decent times in both the free practice sessions and the timed practice. Although he had a bad start in the qualifying round, De Waal quickly managed to move up to 16th place. Unfortunately, due to an unfortunate collision with Benoit Paturel, the story ends in the second lap. “It's a real shame that I was just kicked out. Of course that is also part of motocross, but worst of all, I was only allowed to go there as 28th!"
The next day Micha was super motivated, as we are used to from him. After his positive performance in Ottobiano, he was keen to continue that positive trend. Even two bad starts couldn't stop the No Fear Energy Drink rider. Although it took a while for De Waal to gain momentum in the first heat, he still fought his way to 20th place. In the hottest and toughest race of the weekend, De Waal recovered from 25th place in the opening round to 17th place.
The FIM Motocross World Championship continues on July 22 and 23 in the Czech Loket where the 13th round will be contested.
Micha-Boy De Waal: “I was very disappointed with that bad starting position on the outside of the starting gate. Still, things went pretty well on Sunday. In the first moto my riding wasn't great, but I kept going and finished 20th. I am satisfied with the second race. You pay for every mistake in cash in the MX2 GPs and the fact that I came back to 17th after a small mistake was certainly positive. Driving also went well. Before we go to Loket there is the last round of the Dutch Masters of Motocross where I ride in the MX1 with the No Fear Jumbo BT Motorsport team. For the first time, the Dutch Masters is part of “De Zwarte Cross” in Lichtenvoorde. That will be another fantastic experience and I am looking forward to riding in front of such a large and enthusiastic crowd!”
