Steve Ramon best Belgian in Red Bull Knock Out
More than 70.000 spectators traveled to Scheveningen for Red Bull Knock Out, the toughest beach race in the world. Fifty Belgians are among the more than 1000 motocross riders. Steve Ramon finished fourth, while our compatriot and last year's winner Axel Van de Sande finished fifth. Daymond Martens was the third Belgian in the top ten with ninth place. World MX2 Champion Jeffrey Herlings was supreme and won by a wide margin. “A deserved winner,” says Steve Ramon.
“I am very satisfied with my fourth place,” Ramon continues. “My start was good, and I was able to set a good pace. A very tough race of course, especially because the course became increasingly worse. It took a lot of effort, but I was in good shape and had enough reserves. The track was fantastic, very fun to ride. Jeffrey was unbeatable today, he was in top form.”
Only two riders were not doubled by the unleashed Herlings: Nathan Watson and Glenn Coldenhoff. The Brit and the Dutchman battled for second place, but in the end Glenn had to acknowledge his superiority in Nathan.
Herlings felt completely at home…
“This went very well,” Jeffrey said after the finish. Exhausted, but satisfied. “The track was quite flat at first, which made it easier for everyone. When it got rougher, I felt a lot more at home and was able to overtake everyone. Also beach racing specialists.”
“I was able to show that I can do it too, in a great race and with a huge lead. It went well and that is really wonderful!”
A thousand motocross riders shot out of the starting gates at 9.00:2016 am for the first heat of Red Bull Knock Out 5. They thundered over the 150 kilometer track in changeable weather conditions. Past the famous Kurhaus, under the iconic pier and at speeds over 2,5 kilometers per hour along the XNUMX kilometer long straight along the coastline.
Crowds at the spectacle…
More than 70.000 visitors came to watch the spectacle. On the boulevard and on the Pier, people stood three rows deep to watch how Herlings left 999 opponents in the dust in the first heat. After about a race and a half, he finished almost two minutes ahead of number two.
In the second heat, five hundred dropouts from the first session were given the opportunity to still qualify for the final. It started at 14.00 p.m. Jeffrey was once again in a class of his own, setting record times and not being held back by the circuit's new, spectacular X-loop. Three quarters of an hour before the finish, he added a 'minefield' with extra heavy obstacles and a lot of fallen tree trunks to the course.
