Coldenhoff already dumped before he takes his first win this season for Suzuki
Glenn Coldenhoff scored a first and second place in the heats last weekend in Kegums, Latvia, which was also the first Grand Prix victory of the season for the Suzuki team. But this was immediately followed by disappointing news for the 24-year-old Dutchman because his factory contract will not be extended.
But the Dutchman took the victory very unexpectedly and was previously regularly found in the top ten with his speed in his debut year on the RM-Z450 in the MXGP class. But his progress turns out not to be good enough for the Rockstar Energy Suzuki Europe team, which is closely linked to Sylvain Geboers' factory team. Rumors are circulating that 10-time world champion Stefan Everst will take over the team based in Lommel. Coldenhoff immediately presented his calling card due to his contract situation and at the right job and at the right time.
“I don't have anything at the moment,” Coldenhoff said after I asked about his plans for 2016, because most of the places at the top teams have already almost been arranged. “I can't stay with Suzuki, but I expect something will come out of it in the next few weeks!”
Coldenhoff admits he is a confident rider who worked his way to the top through shoulder and knee injuries. He won his first GP in MX2 at the Matterly Basin circuit in 2013 and was one of the title favorites in 2014 until he retired with a serious knee injury. “I think you can compare this with the victory back then,” he said when we asked whether this performance in Kegums could be compared to that of England. “It's the same feeling but now with the big boys and that's pretty crazy to be able to win here too. I have the confidence now. Ok, there are still a few sand courts but that doesn't matter now. I have become stronger and stronger and the feeling on the bike is getting better and better. I have made big steps in the last few weeks and that has now resulted in a GP win.”
Negotiations for 2016 may enter their final phase in the next two weeks around the Czech Grand Prix. Red Bull KTM also have to decide on their second rider and perhaps we will get more clarity about the Suzuki riders for the new season.
