Georges Jobé dies…
Tonight the news arrived that Georges Jobe has passed away. He died at 51! Jobé had five MX world titles to his name and can be considered one of the greatest in the sport. In 1980, the Liège native was even the youngest world champion ever in 250 cc. This was followed by a new quarter-liter crown in 1983 and 500 cc world titles in 1987, 1991 and 1992. Furthermore, there are two awards as Sportsman of the Year ('87 and '92) and 9 Belgian titles to his name. In addition to his long career as a GP motocross rider, he was also active as a team manager (FN Belgacom, KTM factory team and the failed Jobé-KTM team with Kevin Strijbos and Anthony Boissiere), supermoto rider, organizer and coach.
The eternal striker was and is also very popular with fans in England. His famous double jump - during the 500cc Grand Prix at Hawkstone Park in 1984 - over rival André Malherbe certainly had something to do with that. photographer Nick Haskell captured the moment and that photo has become one of the most iconic MX photos ever. Painter Rob Kinsey made a very beautiful acrylic work based on that photo (below).
With 28 GP victories, our compatriot is in 12th place in the 'eternal rankings'. One of Jobé's biggest victories, however, was his typically determined comeback after a terrible crash in Dubai (2007) that left him paralyzed. Georges Jobé remained a man of character and an incredible go-getter even after his sporting career. After years of rehabilitation, he became independent again, but in 2010 he developed skin cancer, which he overcame. This year, the controversial rider was diagnosed with myelodysplasia, a form of leukemia. A disease to which he succumbed.
The Mxmag editorial team wishes to express its condolences to the family of Georges Jobé, his friends and supporters.
