French cross circuits under fire
Last Sunday's fatal accident in Saint-Thibéry continues to cause commotion in the French motocross world. In that accident, two riders collided with each other on a jumping mountain. A motorcycle flew into the audience, killing a man and injuring 8 spectators, including a 6-year-old girl.
The discussion about the suitability or otherwise of the circuits is flaring up. According to some, the French motorsport federation FFM approves cross circuits too easily. Especially because certain circuits sometimes remained unchanged for 30 to 40 years and are no longer adapted to the performance of current dirt bikes. They therefore argue for an avenue from which the public is further removed. A perimeter road could separate the public from the circuit. The question is whether this would be a feasible option for all French circuits and clubs. In Saint-Thibery the audience stood behind an articulated wooden fence.
