Suz MX Check: Roy Gijsel
Roy Gijsel of Dirt Racing Supply-FMX4ever-KTM did not miss his start to the season. Of course, that didn't go unnoticed by Suz MX! Since great performances are still the fastest way to the Suz MX check, you will find a nice chat with Roy below. And... anyone wondering where the beautiful photos were taken should definitely take a look at MX paradise Royal Hills for themselves!
Suz MX: How did you get into motocross?
Roy Gijsel: “Both my father and brother Bas competed in motocross and I naturally fell into it. I got my first motorcycle at a young age and have never stopped since.”
Suz MX: What are your goals for 2012?
Gijsel: “I prefer not to set goals for 2012. I have often put a lot of pressure on myself, which afterwards broke me down if I did not achieve them. I will do my best and try to put myself in the spotlight as much as possible for the people who helped me to be able to compete again this year.”
Suz MX: What do you do to prepare for a new season?
Gijsel: “In December, my team started working with Dr. Went to Van Elslander. This one sets up my conditioning schedules and this appears to be paying off because I feel fit. I complete the schedules together with my trainer Patrick Piessens.”
Suz MX: Which team do you drive for?
Gijsel: “I ride for the Dirt Racing Supply – FMX4ever team of Nicolas Stampaert with support from the Verburgh brothers (Jimmy and Niki; ed). We were able to conclude a great agreement together and I am very grateful to them for this. Nicolas Stampaert has been a friend of the family for a long time and that is partly why there is a relaxed atmosphere in the team that I feel very good about. I started riding the KTM in December and am very satisfied with it.”
Suz MX: You already made yourself noticed in Stekene with a double series victory, can we expect more from you?
Gijsel: “I like to bring excitement to the matches and to fight for every meter. In general I have a calm driving style, but I really have to work hard to get the most out of it. In addition to BCs and BMB competitions, I am also looking forward to coming to the MCLB more often and competing with the competition.”
Who are the people surrounding you before and after the MX?
Gijsel: “First of all, my parents and brother, they have supported me all my life and have always done everything they can to allow me to compete. This has certainly not been self-evident in recent years(!). My trainer Patrick Piessens who comes with me to train 6 days a week and also a core group of supporters who have been following me for years. And of course all the sponsors without whom I wouldn't be able to race. Thanks again!"
Finally, what would you like to do in your life? may even be something unusual 🙂
Gijsel: “Since I was 16, I have been riding with the Internationals in both the Netherlands and Belgium. I have now noticed that it is not easy to find a balance between going to school, doing an internship and working and also competing at that high level. That is why I try to enjoy the combination of the above things as much as possible, because there is certainly life besides the cross.”
