Five minutes with Nick Triest
Although 2011 did not meet expectations, partly due to injuries Nick Trieste (21) a big step forward next season. The two-time Belgian MX2 champion will compete for the Italian Husqvarna factory team next season, where he will be Alessandro Lupino's teammate. Despite missing 4 GPs this season, Triest finished 20th in the final standings of the MX2 World Championship, his best result was an 8th place in the first round in Spain. Nick was in his 'second home country' last week for the EICMA in Milan. Next week he will return to Italy to continue his introduction to his new team and the Husqvarna TC250. But first it's here on mxmag!
How is the adjustment to the Husqvarna?
Nick Triest: “Super! I first tested the bike in Italy on hard circuits, also in Faenza. That turned out 100% better than expected. I definitely didn't know what to expect as I had never even driven a standard Husqvarna. Everyone wonders what it's like to drive a factory motorcycle. Well, I know now and then you understand where the differences are! The TC250 is very easy to drive and very powerful. Unbelievable, I am very pleasantly surprised. The suspension (Kayaba; ed) also works really well. Back in Belgium I also started training in Axel, Genk and Lommel.”
Can you compare the Husqvarna with a standard KTM?
Sad: “I can't actually do that, because I haven't driven the standard Husqvarna yet! In every area he drives differently than what I am used to. Here too I train with a factory bike. That says something about the commitment and professionalism of the team. Husqvarna is working very decisively and they are fully committed to achieving results.”
After the season you took off your belt, I assume?
Sad: “That's right, but it was also a bit of forced rest, of course. I had surgery on my left hand for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, previously I had the right hand done. For a few weeks I was able to take advantage of doing something different and the routine of traveling and competitions is also gone. For me, that means time for hobbies: a bit of trialling, going out or having something to eat with my girlfriend, looking for second-hand bargains on the internet!”
How is the communication with the team and team manager Ilario Ricci?
Sad: “Okay, Ilario's English is not perfect, but in French it works for both of us. If we discuss anything about email, it is in English via his daughter. Actually, that works out fine. Next week I will also meet my new mechanic.”
The Husqvarna-Ricci Team will then head to Sardinia for a first important training period.
Sad: “Indeed, we are going to take advantage of the good weather conditions in the south. It is now between 20 and 25° C there, which is ideal for both physical and motor training! As far as the engine is concerned, it's more about testing small things. Especially on a human level, it is a good opportunity to interact and form a close team because we are together there for 15 days. That won't be 15 days of hard work, but it is important nonetheless. The new factory block will be ready just before or after New Year.”
Do you already know what your equipment will look like next year?
Sad: “Cool, anyway! The equipment itself is Husqvarna's own line that Alessandro Lupino also rode this year, the goggles will be Progrip, the helmet is a new brand Just One Helmets, the boots have not yet been confirmed. But I will look very different anyway!”
Will we see you in action in a competition this winter?
Sad: “The real start of the season will be the Italian championship in February and March. Maybe I will still participate in Tony Cairoli's charity race in Sicily, but that is of course more for fun.”
Thanks for the chat, we wish you a productive winter!
Sad: "Don't mention it. In turn, I would like to thank my supporters, sponsors, friend Ellen and, above all, my parents.”
