Ryan Villopoto takes the money!
Ashemenou! Ryan Villopoto has won the three finals of the Monster Energy Cup in Las Vegas. RV can also credit 1 million dollars to his bank account! Ryan Dungey, who made his debut on KTM, finished second thanks to two second places and a third place. Brett Metcalfe (4/3/3) was third.
Villopoto won the first final unconvincingly and immediately made his intentions known. The surprise of the first final, however, was the second place of the returning Ben Townley. Townley held off Dungey nicely, Metcalfe finished fourth ahead of Eli Tomac.
In the second final, Villopot continued his momentum. He won easily, while Dungey now finished second. Townley was fifth until he came into the pits with technical problems. The all-deciding final was a repeat of the dominance Villopoto showed earlier. The double American champion also proved unstoppable in the third final. On his way to the $1 million grand prize, the Kawasaki rider led for thirty laps. Dungey again finished second ahead of Metcalfe, Nick Wey and the surprising Martin Davalos.
In addition to the honor and the big check, Villopoto also literally received 'the coolest' trophy ever; the Monster Energy Cup that weighs more than 98 kg…
Ryan Villopoto: “This is really crazy! I can hardly believe it, it's surreal. I have had a fantastic season, it would be something if I could repeat this next year! I would like to thank Monster Energy and Feld. Today was anything but a typical SX race due to the three starts instead of one final. I always had a good start and that meant a lot today.”
Ryan Dungey: “Congratulations to Ryan Villopto. We have tested hard in recent weeks and I am happy with where we are. I had a great time tonight, so I'm really looking forward to 2012.”
Brett Metcalfe: "Fantastic. It was a very fun match. I will definitely be there again next year.”
