Mauno Hermunen wins 25th Superbiker Mettet!
The Finn Mauno Hermunen won the Mettet Superbiker for the second consecutive time this afternoon. In difficult, muddy conditions, the Husqvarna factory rider kept a cool head to win ahead of Sébastien Tortelli and European MX2 champion Romain Fèbvre.
The anniversary edition of the Superbiker, it was the 25th edition, announced itself as promising as ever before, but this time the rain was a spoilsport. That didn't spoil the fun, because as always, in addition to interesting competitions, there was also a lot of show on the program: freestyle motocross, a drag quad with rocket propulsion (you must have seen it once), a stunt show by Chris Pfeiffer and lots of beautiful people on and off the circuit!
The holeshot went to Frenchman Sylvain Bidart. However, after one lap Cyrill Scheiwiller took over command. Although he missed his start, Mauno Hermunen proved that he felt perfectly at home in Mettet. Compared to last year, the circuit was much more MX-oriented, but that makes no difference for the funny and fast Finn! In the final reserved for the supermoto specialists, he stormed from just inside the top 10 to victory. Hermunen was in the lead after just four laps. At the finish he was more than 5 seconds ahead of Bidart. World Championship leader Thomas Chareyre also did a great job of catching up, finishing third. Belgian champion Lionel Deridder became the best home rider with a 7th place. 23-year-old Maaik Voorwinden held up well in this select group. Voorwinden started strongly and finished fifth.
Strong Breugelmans, Fèbvre wins in Starbiker
Cédric 'Melotski' Melotte was able to take advantage of a cannon start to take the lead. However, after half the race the reign of the ex-GP star was over. Romain Fèbvre, who rode supermoto for two years, turned out to be a lot faster and came with seven-time boots. First Fèbvre had pushed his way past Breugelmans, then Melotte was in for the axe. Fèbvre also finished the job quickly and won ahead of Melotte and Breugelmans! Joël Smets, who had made a more than decent start on his enduro(!) Husqvarna, occupied fourth place for a long time, but in the end he had to give in and lost one position to Kawasaki factory rider Xavier Boog. Ken De Dycker didn't have the best start. Towards the end, however, he started to gain more and more steam. Keeno finished well behind Smets, but managed to take a nice 6th place ahead of Demaria, Ward and Bostrom.
Superbiker final: Fèbvre overconfident
Mauno Hermunen and Superbiker revelation Romain Fèbvre were clearly the favorites for the grand final. Hermunen was again the fastest route, but in the first off-road section Romain sped past the Finn. Unfortunately, Fèbvre's empire did not last long, because of his mistake Hermunen and Sébastien Tortelli came alongside. Tortelli made his Supermoto debut in Mettet last year and Dyno performed much better this time! Sébastien maintained contact with Hermunen, but he was never threatened. Meanwhile, Fèbvre animates the audience with a well-received comeback. In no time, the 19-year-old talent takes the measure of experienced players such as Delepine, Fraikin and Chareyre. Bidart also gets the axe. When an attack on Tortelli for second place unfortunately goes spectacularly wrong a second time. Fortunately without much damage, but more than a 3rd place is no longer possible for Fèbvre! Dutch Supermoto hope Maaik Voorwinden has to leave veteran Marcel Van Drunen ahead this time, he arrives in 14th. Van Drunen finished 7th, after the best Belgian Marc Fraikin.
