LS Honda looks ahead to Gaildorf
After a follow-up scan for his neck injury, it became clear that Ken De Dycker will be out for at least another three weeks. As a result, Shaun Simpson will once again be the only LS Honda Racing rider this weekend during the penultimate round of the MX1 World Championship in Gaildorf, Germany. This small German town is located about 80 kilometers east of Stuttgart. Simpson, who leads the Belgian MX Championship, made a strong impression in his home GP two weeks ago. In Winchester, Shaun not only took the holeshot, in the second moto he rode well in second position until the restart.
Gaildorf's fast, hard course is 1.554 meters long. Despite a 6-year absence, 'Auf der Wacht' is a traditional attraction on the GP calendar. This natural circuit with its flowing elevation changes has been the scene of fantastic duels in the past, but this coming weekend many new drivers and teams will discover Gaildorf for the first time. In 1976, exactly 35 hairs ago, the first GP took place in Gaildorf. Since then, MSC Gaildorf has received many GPs. Since the permanent introduction of the so-called triple Grand Prix in 2001, the German circuit was continuously on the calendar until 2005. For the young Belgian LS Honda Racing, the European GP will even be their first visit to Gaildorf! But veterans can also count on surprises as the track was only completely renovated last year.
In the past, Gaildorf has proven to be fertile hunting ground for Honda MX1 riders. The French former world champion Mickael Pichon rode his CRF450R to GP victory in 2004, Josh Coppins took third place in 2005. In addition to spectacular races, you can also expect better party work in Germany because the famous party tent in Gaildorf is undoubtedly the biggest on the World Cup calendar!
Shaun Simpson: “I have only ridden in Gaildorf once. That was in 2005 and it was really wet then! Actually, I have no idea what the track looks like when it's dry. Of course I have seen images and what other people think of them. In terms of style, it is not exactly my favorite type of circuit. During the Belgian Championships in Orp-le-Grand, I had a good day but my results suffered from the flu I had the week before. Everything is fine now, I feel fresh and ready to go for it... (laughing) especially now that I'm just showing up at the start!”
