GP update: injuries in Sevlievo
We all already know that motocross is an injury-prone sport. GP riders cannot escape this law either. A number of riders immediately had to lick their wounds in Sevlievo. For a number of riders, the injuries were so serious that they were in danger of missing the Dutch GP in Valkenswaard.
– The first dropout was Greg Aranda. Aranda had set the fastest time in free practice on Saturday morning, but crashed hard in pre-qualifying practice. “I went into a corner too fast, crashed and landed on my head,” said the Frenchman. He then decided, together with the Rockstar Bud Racing Kawasaki team, not to participate again during the remainder of the weekend. Moreover, Aranda also appears to have injured his meniscus. “I will have to undergo a minor operation, which means I will probably not be fit in time for Valkenswaard. However, my goal is to be at the start in the 1 during the weekend of May 5e round of the Elite Championship in Plomion” concluded Aranda.
– Things are apparently not going well for the Suzuki Europe MX2 team of manager Thomas Ramsbacher. At the end of last season, Ramsbacher had to watch with sorrow as goldcrest Ken Roczen left for KTM and took main sponsor Teka with him to Austria in his luggage. For a moment the team seemed doomed to disappear, but Ramsbacher still managed to secure the budget for an MX2 rider, Valentin Teillet. In Sevlievo, Teillet had to abandon the battle in the first heat after just one lap with a technical problem. After being involved in a crash at the start in the second moto, Teillet started a catch-up race. However, his progress was stopped by a serious crash in which Teillet injured his right shoulder. The shoulder injury seems to be not too bad, but the bruised ribs of the man from the Vendée could keep him sidelined in Valkenswaard.
– We will also more than likely not see Mattis Karro in action in the North Brabant sand. The Latvian from the MVR-D Honda team broke a fibula in Sevlievo. The complex injury is of such a nature that Karro may also immediately cancel the GPs of the United States and Brazil.
– American Husqvarna MX2 rider Michael Leib wisely stayed aside after free practice on Saturday. Leib suffered a headache again during free practice as a result of a serious crash during a match for the Italian championship a few weeks ago.
– MX1 world champion Antonio Cairoli also shared the blows in Sevlievo. Tony hit the knee he broke a few years ago in the first moto, which cost him the MX2 world title. Nevertheless, the Red Bull Teka KTM rider was able to limit the damage and finish both heats. Cairoli nevertheless decided to visit his treating physician, doctor Toon Claes, to have the injury examined.
