Pourcel champion, Villopoto returns
The revival of the AMA/FIM Supercross Championship took place yesterday in Houston, Texas. Cristophe Pourcel claimed his second consecutive Lites East title with a win. In the Supercross it was also a green party with Ryan Villopoto. Chad Reed rode to fourth place during his comeback.
Villopoto took the Spike Holeshot Award in the final with Rockstar/Makita Suzuki's Ryan Dungey, and San Manuel Yamaha's Josh Hill his wheel. RV quickly drove away from the competition, but the duels behind him were definitely worth it. On lap ten, Dungey stalled, dropping from eighth to ninth place. GEICO Powersports Honda's Kevin Windham recorded his best result of the season as he finished second, with another veteran Ivan Tedesco (Valli Motorsports/Rockstar/Yamaha) completing the podium. Villopoto has now made up nine points in the standings. Dungey starts the last four races with a 12-point lead...
Cri-cri does it again in the Lites
Christophe Pourcel's lead over Rockstar/Makita Suzuki pilot Austin Stroupe was eight points ahead of the penultimate round of the SX Lites East championship. However, a crash by Stroupe during afternoon training placed him inactive for the evening program. Blake Baggett managed to get the holeshot, but the former MX2 world champion quickly passed the early leader. Pourcel then led from start to finish, good for his fifth victory of the season.
“I didn't even know I could win the championship tonight,” Pourcel said. “I just did what I always did: ride as fast as I could and try to win. You never know when you can win the title, but tonight we were lucky. I'm happy. I will have parties until next weekend, tonight I will have a good rest and next weekend I want to win again.”
It was an exciting duel for the podium places, but Baggett won for second place. GEICO Powersports Honda's Justin Barcia, with very short hair for the occasion, finished third. The 2010 Monster Energy AMA Supercross season continues next weekend in St. Louis, Missouri, at the Edward Jones Dome.
