Kawasaki up in Daytona
Cri Cri Pourcel and Ryan Villopoto won the ninth round of the AMA SX Championship at the Daytona International Speedway. Pourcel extends his lead and Villopoto closes the gap on Ryan Dungey, who finished second at Daytona.
The SX final was shocked in the initial phase by a heavy fall by Grant Langston. Langston hit his head hard and was taken to hospital for a CT scan. The red flag was immediately waved and a little later we were given a restart. Just like the first time, it was Villopoto who immediately took the lead. He never looked back and won for Dungey, who was never far away. Behind the leaders, it was once again occasional rider Trey Canard who managed to get onto the podium. Josh Hill, who had started third, did not get further than ninth place on this tough course.
Chad Reed, who started in the training sessions and immediately clocked the fastest time, did not start in the evening program. Reed also hurt his right thumb this week and, together with his left hand, which is not yet completely 100%, he decided to wait another week before making his return appearance.
Among the Lites, it was Stroupe who took the fastest start. However, Pourcel quickly came up and with the help of some super lines he had found, he shot into the lead. Stroupe came up but could not threaten Cricri for the victory. Dean Wilson, teammate of Pourcel and Rookie this year, was on the podium for the first time in his career. Pourcel has now won three of the three races but cannot afford to make any mistakes because Stroupe, who finished second for the third time in a row, follows close behind.
Next week the circus will descend on Toronto, Canada for the 10th race.
