KEMEA Yamaha Official MX2 Race Report, GP4 Mexico
The last overseas race of the first part of the season was held last weekend in Mexico. The fourth GP of the season took place on the spectacular circuit near the beautiful city of Leon.
Alvin Ostlund did not travel to Mexico. He was not yet fit enough after his fall in Argentina a few weeks ago.
In the qualifying race on Saturday, Benoit and Brent felt good on the course, which is located 1800m above sea level. Benoit drove the fastest training time and finished 5th in the race. Brent crossed the line in 8th.
In the first heat, both KEMEA riders got off to a good start within the top 10. Benoit started a strong race and with some nice passing maneuvers he rose to second place. Brent initially tried to follow his teammate but had stomach problems. He arrived 8th.
Brent had a super start in the second series and kept up with the leaders in the early stages. He was passed by Seewer after a few laps, but managed to hold on to fifth place. He finished sixth in the final standings and remains sixth in the World Cup standings.
Benoit had a bad start in the second series and was in deep trouble at the beginning of the race. To make matters worse, the Frenchman crashed and had to start last. However, he did not give up and came back to 8th place. He finished fifth in the final standings, but lost a few points to the leader in the World Cup standings. Benoit is still third and is now 14 points behind the leader.
Benoit Paturel: “I am deeply disappointed with the result. Just like in Argentina, the speed is there and I should have finished on the podium... But that's motocross and I can't panic. The season is still long but I definitely want to get a better result in Arco.”
Brent Vandoninck: “I have to say that this was a physically tough weekend. With less oxygen in the air due to the altitude in combination with stomach cramps it was really difficult. Ultimately, I am quite satisfied with the result this weekend. In the first series I got stuck in eighth place. The stomach pain made me lose a lot of energy and I couldn't push. In the second series I had a good start and had less pain. Only towards the end did the cramps occur again, but I persevered to remain fifth. I'm glad we can go back to Europe now and fall back on the routines we are used to.”
