VMCF Paal: Joy and sadness for Weigert
The VMCF was also finally able to open the 2021 season and did so at the Paal-Beringen circuit. The organization of MC Zoutleeuw did not immediately have the easiest task for the wheels because after a wonderful training day on Saturday the heavens opened. The track was immediately completely flooded, but the club rolled up its sleeves and was able to provide a perfectly rideable track to the riders who showed up en masse.
Unfortunately, the course turned out to be quite difficult for some because there were many falls, especially in the morning. Champion Frederic Weigert put his name on the tables as the winner, but had a very heavy fall in the final series, which neutralized the match.
The holeshot was reserved for Mark Boot, but in the first corner things went terribly wrong for the Technicross rider as a huge crash followed in which David Foguenne was also involved. Frederic Weigert took over smoothly and was immediately able to create a gap.
However, the opposition was not bad because Stef Bastaens rode a hell of a race. The MX2 rider was able to keep up the pace for a long time, but in the second half the heavy guns joined in, led by Wesly Smolders and Jonas Salaets. But neither could close the gap to Weigert, so Stijn Verstrepen also joined. Verstrepen managed to accelerate and took second place ahead of Jonas Salaets and Wesley Smolders.
Jelle Smeesters rounded out the top five ahead of Dimitri Sep and Mark Boot. In the MX2, Stef Bastaens saw the victory slip away because of an unleashed Jelle Verbruggen, who took his first VMCF victory. The podium was completed by Ilan Heirwegh who knocked Jordy Kenzeler and Maxime Colson off the podium.
We can be quite brief about the final series because Frederic Weigert had a serious crash in the first round, causing the red flag to be raised to ensure the safety of the emergency services. It immediately ended the race prematurely because there was no restart, so the first series also became the final result. The reigning champion was immediately taken away for a broken buttock and we hope to see the experienced veteran back on the circuits as soon as possible, safe and healthy.
