Lucas Coenen won the MXGP of China today. In Shanghai he won both series and beat Kay de Wolf and Simon Laengenfelder in the final standings. Kay de Wolf is now one step closer to the world title. Liam Everts crashed in the early stages of the second series and remained under the engine for a long time.

First series

Lucas Coenen took the holeshot ahead of Simon Laengenfelder and Liam Everts. Kay de Wolf got away from the gate in fifth place. Yamaha rider Karlis Reisulis made an immediate impression by attacking Everts and taking his place on lap four. Kay de Wolf started to put pressure on Everts after ten minutes, who in turn got alongside Reisulis again.

Karlis Reisulis also had to let de Wolf pass on the fast circuit of Shanghai a little later. On lap 14 Kay de Wolf passed Everts and took over P3 from the Belgian. At the front Lucas Coenen was still in the lead while Laengenfelder never managed to get on the wheel of the Husqvarna rider.

Lucas Coenen won the series ahead of Laengenfelder and de Wolf. Everts came fourth ahead of Mikkel Haarup.

Second series

Karlis Reisulis took the lead ahead of Simon Laengenfelder and Kay de Wolf. Then followed Liam Everts, Lucas Coenen and Camden Mclellan. In the first lap Liam Everts crashed after a collision with Lucas Coenen and remained under the bike. The medical team was quickly on the scene to provide assistance.

Rick Elzinga disappeared from the race at about the same time and seemed to have sustained an injury. At the front, Reisulis had already driven away by six seconds while Laengenfelder and de Wolf fought a tough battle for second place. Lucas Coenen rode behind McLellan for laps and had difficulty connecting with the South African.

At the front, Reisulis gradually lost his lead over Laengenfelder and de Wolf. On lap 12, Reisulis went down in a bend and had to watch Laengenfelder, de Wolf, Coenen and Haarup pass him. Kay de Wolf then took the lead from the German.

Lucas Coenen finally got going and with five minutes left on the clocks he was suddenly in P2. His teammate Kay de Wolf was just ahead of him. A small mistake by de Wolf allowed Lucas to pass Coenen. He also won the first series ahead of Kay de Wolf. Simon Laengenfelder came in third. Coenen took the final victory ahead of Kay de Wolf and Simon Laengenfelder with a new double series victory.

Kay de Wolf is one step closer to a first world title and has a lead of 36 points on Lucas Coenen. The last GP of the year will be held in Spain in two weeks.
