Will Andrea Bonacorsi be Maxime Renaux's replacement?
The Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing Team traveled to Argentina this year with high expectations, but the opening GP did not go as planned. Jago Geerts crashed during the first meters of qualifying and suffered significant physical damage, which meant he had to be sidelined for months. In addition, his teammate Maxime Renaux threw in the towel two weeks later due to severe ankle pain. Radio paddock now speaks of Andrea Bonacorsi who would man the Renaux engine from Portugal.
Renaux suffered a foot injury last year and that injury is now bothering him again, requiring new surgery. The 20-year-old Bonacorsi is in his rookie season in MX2, but since the previous GP in Trentino, rumors have become increasingly concrete that the Italian will immediately switch to the MXGP class and the Yamaha YZ450F. It would be a surprising but also a logical choice because Bonacorsi's physique is more suitable for a 450cc machine. He already proved this last year during the MXoN. Yamaha previously shoved Geerts' machine under the buttocks of sand king Todd Kellett. He finished 19th in Riola Sardo.
Currently, Hans Corvers' team has to make do with Calvin Vlaanderen. He did more than well in Trentino because he finished fourth in the daily rankings, proving that he has the speed to go for a podium place again. We expect a press release from the Yamaha camp later this week regarding Bonacorsi's possible switch.
