Dakar Rally: Cornejo wins seventh stage
After the rest day, another long training session was reserved for the drivers of the Dakar Rally. Jose Cornejo (Honda) managed to win this and saw Kevin and Luciano Benavides finish second and third. The top ten are moving closer together in the standings, making the coming days very exciting.
The riders had to cover 483 km from Ryadh on a varying surface of stones, sand and also some asphalt. Jose Cornejo shot away like an arrow from a bow and quickly took the measure of Adrien Van Beveren. The Chilean won the stage with a small lead over the Benavides brothers. Pablo Quintanilla was the unlucky one of the day and had to tinker for half an hour to revive a faltering Honda.
Botswanan Ross Branch on the Indian Hero continues to ride a solid Dakar and is still in contention for the final classification. He finished fourth today. Jérôme Martiny once again drove a solid race today and finished in P27. Joris Van Dyck and Pierre Saeys had not yet arrived when this article went to press.
In the standings, Ricky Brabec remains the leader, just one second behind Ross Branch. Jose Cornejo is third at 6 minutes and Van Beveren is in P4 at 14 minutes. Tomorrow the training camp goes from Al Duwadimi to Hail and 458 kilometers have to be covered, of which 220 are against the clock.
