Van Weerdenburg takes BeNeDu cup and Dutch title in Lommel
Last Saturday the final in the battle for the BeNeDu cup took place in Lommel. Due to the permit conditions, the MX 2 youth had to be divided into two groups. Group A were the drivers riding on a Dutch and German license. This class also competed for points in their national championships. Group B were the drivers riding on a Belgian license.
In group A the battle for the day's victory was between Alex van Weerdenburg and Tiago Serneels (Bel). It was Serneels who saw his chance of winning the day limited to a minimum in the first heat. In the final phase of the heat he fell from second place just behind Van Weerdenburg to fifth place and eventually finished fourth. Van Weerdenburg took advantage and took the heat victory. With second place in the second round, the day's victory went to the DJR rider and after the first round he could officially call himself Dutch Champion MX2 Youth (MON). He had already celebrated the accompanying party 1 week earlier during the competition in Utrecht. Serneels took second place in the daily rankings with the heat victory in the second heat. In third place we saw the best German of the day with Benedikt Romankiewitz with a second and third place in the heats.
In group B, the day's victory went to Yirre Saenen based on the second heat, with a second and first place in the heats. He stayed ahead of C-jay Vanderelst. At an appropriate distance it was Seth van Tatenhove who finished third twice and also finished third in the daily rankings.
The starting point for the final was as follows: the leader in the standings was the German Arne Berscheid. He was followed on seven points by the Dutchman Amani Saraç and three points behind him was the German Philippe Garcke. Van Weerdenburg was five points behind Garcke and he was followed by Henry Hauswirth (Germany) on four points. So the Germans have every chance to win the BeNeDu cup and Berscheid was certainly the favorite for the overall victory given the result of the first match in Horst, the Netherlands. However, Berscheid had crashed in the first heat of group A and he returned home. Saraç had broken his ulna earlier this season. He returned during the match in Groesbeek, but this did not go as planned and he did not play again and was also absent in Lommel. Stay over Garcke, Van Weerdenburg and Hauswirth.
During the final round, Van Weerdenburg took the lead at the first pass ahead of Vanderelst, Joshua de Smet (Bel), Dani Puts (Ned) and Romankiewitz. In the second lap Vanderelst took over the lead. Vanderelst quickly took a big lead from Weerdenburg and won the heat. Van Weerdenburg, in turn, quickly took the lead and his second place was never in danger. Behind it, Puts seemed to be preparing for an attack on De Smet. However, De Smet beat him again by about five seconds in the final phase. Behind Puts, Ramonkiewitz could not hold on to his fifth place. He saw Stein Kanters (Ned) pass him by. The names of Garcke and Hauswirth were missing from the front positions. Both did not appear in the piece and that was good news for van Weerdenburg who could be honored as winner of the BeNeDu Cup in the MX2 Youth class. Only the Germans finished in the top five.
