MXGP Latvia: Herlings puts things in order in opening race!
With a fifth series victory of the season, Jeffrey Herlings (Red Bull KTM) showed who is boss in MXGP. Herlings was the best ahead of World Cup leader Jargo Prado (Red Bull GasGas), Ruben Fernandez and a great Glenn Coldenhoff (Monster Energy Yamaha).
Jorge Prado raced to his 6th holeshot of the season ahead of Fernandez, Herlings and Vlaanderen. However, some riders did not get through the first corner unscathed. Paturel and Guillod, among others, went down.
Herlings wasted no time and quickly took the measure of Fernandez. Prado had free rein at the front, but Herlings closed the gap with the race leader in a short time. However, his Spanish title rival responded, and to make matters worse, 'The Bullet' made a mistake and was set back six seconds.
Coldenhoff fought his way from a start in the sub-top to P4. With four minutes to go, Herlings was again at the back wheel of Prado. In the 14th lap, Jeffrey lashed out mercilessly with a perfect overtaking maneuver on the Spaniard.
Both Febvre and Seewer had a bad start and had to come back from outside the top 10. They would finish 6th and 7th respectively. Standing Construct Honda's Brian Bogers finished 9th. The first race had a dramatic outcome for Brent Van Doninck. He fell in the third round and dislocated his hip. The decisive second MXGP round will start at 16:10 PM. Then we will also find out whether Herlings can take the 103rd GP victory of his career!
